de·con·struct: A Group Exhibition Organized by FIT’s Art Market Program School of Graduate Studies

On View April 17 – May 10, 2015

de·con·struct /dēkənˈstrəkt/ verb: to take apart or examine in order to reveal the basis or composition often with the intention of exposing biases, flaws, or inconsistencies.

The graduating class of the Master of Arts program in Art Market: Principles and Practices, presents de·con·struct, an exhibition of work by ten artists, opening Friday, April 17 at 6:00 pm at NOoSphere Arts, 251 East Houston Street, New York.

The work in this exhibition examines contemporary social standards and artistic norms. de·con·struct  poses the question, Do these works contain a depiction of truth or a crafted fabrication? The viewer is challenged to figuratively “deconstruct” notions of beauty, sense of self, gender roles, and the various sources of these preconceptions.

The following artists are featured:

Elizabeth Allen-Cannon is an oil painter currently exploring contemporary ideals of beauty and romance, which she believes originate in theater and cinema.

Santina Amato combines performance, video, sculpture and site-specific practices to explore the sensorial experience of femininity and female identity within a surrealistic framework.

Elle is a graffiti and street artist noted for her use of diverse mediums and tools, including fire extinguishers, rollers, aerosol, markers, acrylic, and silkscreens. Elle’s imagery frequently includes powerful women and references to the natural world.

Auguste Garufi is a multi-media artist. His installations, works on paper, paintings, and poems convey the simplicity and strength that exist in everyday moments.

Johanna Goodman is a prolific artist known for her visible and raucous illustrations.  Her bold, revealing portraits of celebrities and cultural icons convey personality, beauty, flaws, and a sometimes unnerving energy.

Maya Koenig cuts up and reconfigures existing magazine ads and near-seamlessly reinserts her altered versions into existing fashion magazines. Her collages subtly disrupt the smooth flow of information and the conveyance of standards of beauty.

Shantell Martin is known for her linear language of characters, creatures, and messages that are partly autobiographical with a touch of dreamlike whimsy. Covering walls, clothing, and objects, the work bridges fine and commercial art and everyday experience.

Liz Nielsen is a photographer whose luminous works reference abstracted landscape, space, nature, and architecture, and their jubilant, hand-made quality results from an embrace of chance, balanced by a knowledge of light and darkroom processes.

Kristin O’Connor uses a variety of mediums to explore beauty and its relationship to distortion and the grotesque.

John Whitlock works primarily in assemblage and collage of paper, video, or sound. Inspired by popular graphic culture and the overabundance of media stimuli present in our society, his work attempts to evoke familiarity through abstraction.

During their second year in FIT’s Art Market program, the graduate students take a two-semester practicum in which they organize, curate, and promote a group exhibition. They graduate from the program with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for professional careers in the art market. The curators of de·con·struct  are Nina Blumberg, Cassandra Caro, Bianca Hirschowitz, Johanna Quinton, Caitlin Santomauro, TaraMarie Tocci, and Beckie Warren.

A fully illustrated catalog with essay by Lori Zimmer will accompany the show.
