FIT in the News – February 24

A New York Times Facebook Live video tour (February 22) of Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968, currently on view at The Museum at FIT (MFIT), has received nearly 122,000 views to date. The tour, led by Colleen Hill, curator of Costume and Accessories and the exhibition’s curator, was featured on the Times’ Facebook home page and is accessible by searching for Paris Refashioned on The New York Times Facebook page.

QGazette.com (February 22) reported that President Joyce F. Brown met with Senator Toby Ann Stavisky in Albany. They discussed FIT students’ post-graduation success rate.

Fibre2Fashion.com (February 16), Just-Style.comEdAccessible.com (both February 20), and BrooklynPaper.com (February 23) announced that FIT will offer two courses in Brooklyn this summer as part of the city’s $136 million commitment to create a Made in New York–branded campus at Sunset Park’s Bush Terminal. The underutilized buildings will be transformed into a hub for garment manufacturing and film and television production. FIT will deliver the initiative’s educational component by offering courses at the hub starting this summer with two noncredit courses that will count toward a Creative Maker Certificate of Achievement in Ethical Design and Local Manufacturing Fundamentals. This certificate program is being offered through FIT’s Center for Continuing and Professional Studies. The courses will be held at the nearby Brooklyn Army Terminal until the buildout of Bush Terminal is complete.

NYTimes.com (February 17) and The New York Times (February 19) wrote about the city’s funding for the new academic building to be constructed on 28th Street, in an article on Mayor Bill de Blasio’s commitment to bolstering the fashion industry in New York City.

NationalJeweler.com (February 16) announced that FIT Jewelry Design student Isabelle Meyers was the winner of the Scott Kay/FIT Jewelry Design contest. Meyers designed a three-piece bridal jewelry set.

Footwear Plus (February issue) announced that Den Ly, a senior in the Accessories Design program, was the winner of a contest sponsored by Spanish footwear brand Pikolinos. His design will be featured in their spring 2018 collection.

MFIT was included in a list of “31 Insanely Cheap and Free Things to Do Around New York” on LittleGreyBox.net (February 21).

HarpersBazaar.mx (Mexico, February 20) highlighted garments from the collection of MFIT that have been de-acquisitioned and are currently being sold at auction. Funds raised will be used to purchase new items for MFIT’s collections.

Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968, which opened at MFIT on February 10, received feature coverage on BlouinArtInfo.com (with a five-image slide show), AccessoriesMagazine.com (with the headline “Don’t Miss”), Observer.com (calling it “gorgeous”), Vogue.com (all February 18), WSJ.com and The Wall Street Journal (both February 21). Hamish Bowles also covered the exhibition on Vogue.com (February 20). Additional coverage appeared on Vogue.it (Italy, February 21) and in The New York Times (February 17), which reported on the cancellation of the opening night reception due to a snowstorm.

Black Fashion Designers, currently on display at MFIT, was featured on NY1.com’s Your Weekend Starts Now (February 16). Coverage also appeared on NYPost.com (February 17), in Harlem News (February 9) and The New York Post (February 18), and twice in Elle (March issue).

The Black Fashion Designers Symposium, held on February 6, received coverage on Menafn.com (February 19).

Adrian: Hollywood and Beyond, opening at MFIT on March 7 received advance coverage on LeExpress.fr (France, February 21).
