Of Cats and Men

Charles Dickens said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?”—a sentiment shared by “cat men” from Marlon Brando to Karl Lagerfeld to Winston Churchill. Feline fancier Sam Kalda, Illustration MFA ‘14, makes the case that it’s not just women who love cats with his gorgeously illustrated book, Of Cats and Men, featuring stories, quotes, and delightful drawings of noted cat enthusiasts of the male persuasion. His subjects include artists, writers, thinkers, and statesmen; cats may be the one thing Ai Weiwei, Mark Twain, Nikola Tesla, and Andy Warhol have in common.

Kalda, whose clients include The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Pentagram, West Elm, and Wired, won the Society of Illustrators gold medal, was on the shortlist for the World Illustration Awards, and was named to CMYK magazine’s “Top 100 New Creatives.” His cover illustration and inside spread for Hue magazine’s winter 2015-16 issue, featured, of course, cats.
