Bravery and Sacrifice

In Bravery and Sacrifice, NYPD Heroes, a new exhibition at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the Society of Illustrators and the New York Police Department honor the heroes of September 11. On that day, 23 members of the police force died, and over the past 16 years, another 132 succumbed to related illnesses. Illustration faculty members Melanie Reim, Stephen Gardner, and James Houston paid homage to these fallen heroes by contributing art to this moving exhibition.

“For the loved ones of the victims and for those who are still getting sick and dying, 9/11 is not something that happened in the past; it’s something that is still happening to them every day,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said at the exhibition’s opening. “We owe it to them and to ourselves to never forget their courage, their selflessness, their sacrifice.”

Take in Reim’s and Gardner’s work below, and see the exhibition at Jay College of Criminal Justice’s Memorial Hall during regular business hours until December.
