Intellect Publishes Peer-Reviewed Article by Daniel James Cole

Critical Studies in Men’s Fashion, a peer-reviewed journal published in two volumes yearly by Intellect Ltd., has published “Haute Homeless: Placing Brother Sharp in a Fashion Industry Continuum” by Daniel James Cole, Fashion Design–Art.

The article tells the story of a Chinese homeless man who became an internet fashion icon in 2010, coincidentally at the same time Vivienne Westwood showed a homeless-inspired menswear collection. Exploring these and other instances of a centuries-old fascination for fashionable slumming (and the ethics of such phenomena), Cole first examined these themes while co-writing (with Nancy Deihl) The History of Modern Fashion, and in 2015 presented an earlier version as a paper for the Costume Society of America Northeastern Regional Conference.
