FIT in the News – May 19

The Division of Communications and External Relations is pleased to share FIT in the News, which reports highlights of major news stories about the college and/or that quote the college’s experts. These stories will be accessible for at least seven days by clicking on the links below.

WWD.comForExTV.com (May 16), CoreCommunique.com (May 17), and TheSeoulTimes.com (May 18) announced that FIT will offer two degree programs—Fashion Design and Fashion Business Management, leading to an AAS degree—at SUNY Korea in Songdo, South Korea, beginning August 25. South Korea is the college’s third location abroad, along with Milan and Florence. Classes will be held at Incheon Global Campus in Songdo, South Korea’s only “smart city,” which is becoming Northeast Asia’s economic hub. SUNY Korea, which was established in 2012 as the first American university in South Korea through the combined effort and investment of the South Korean and U.S. governments and SUNY at Stony Brook University, is the first campus to locate there.

Curbed.com (May 11) and Newsday (May 12) reported that FIT’s new academic building, to be constructed on 28th Street, was a winner of the 35th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design. Awarded by the New York City Public Design Commission and presented by Mayor Bill de Blasio, the winning projects were honored for their remarkable designs that create sustainable spaces and enhance neighborhoods. The ten-story building, designed by SHoP, will feature smart classrooms, a textile lab, administrative offices, and a student life hall.

The Future of Fashion, held on May 8, continues to receive media coverage. Style Code Live (May 15, at the 16:30 mark), the web-based fashion video series on Amazon.com took a behind-the-scenes peek prior to the runway show. WGSN.com (May 5) and PetiteParade.com (May 16) both spotlighted the childrenswear category. Additional coverage appeared on KnitGrandeur.com (May 11), Yahoo.com/Style (May 12), and in WWD (May 10).

Eco-Chick.com (May 10) reported on the FIT student team that won the 2016 Biodesign Challenge with their creation of an organic material made from alginate (algae) and chitosan (fungi), then extruded into “yarn” and knitted into “fabric.” FIT bested eight other leading U.S. colleges and universities. The teams created projects that envision future applications of biotechnology.

CherrywoodStudio.Wordpress.com (May 15) reported on the NFLxFIT Visual System Design Contest, a collaboration between the National Football League and FIT, in which students minoring in Creative Technology were challenged to reimagine visual representations of all 32 NFL teams’ identities, including artwork and graphics inspired by the teams’ existing logos and fan cultures. The systems will be offered for use on NFL merchandise.

For an article “The Best Classes For Creative Types In NYC,” NewYork.CBSLocal.com (May 16) included courses in fashion design offered as part of the Summer Intensives: Summer In the City offered by the Center for Continuing and Professional Studies.

The Boston Globe (May 13) spoke with Shawn Grain Carter, associate professor, Fashion Business Management, for an article on music festival fashions, such as Coachella and Boston Calling.

For an article on the increasing usage of 3D printers at colleges, EdTechMagazine.com (May 3) highlighted FIT’s 3D lab and spoke with Jana Duda, technology resources manager, Gladys Marcus Library.
