FIT in the News – January 9, 2018

The Division of Communications and External Relations is pleased to share FIT in the News, which reports highlights of major news stories about the college and/or that quote the college’s experts. These stories will be accessible for at least seven days by clicking on the links below.

The Chosun Ilbo (not available online) and ChoSun.com (South Korea, both December 14) spoke with President Joyce F. Brown, who discussed the launch of FIT’s third international campus, FIT at SUNY Korea in Songdo. The FIT academic programs now being offered in South Korea are Fashion Business Management and Fashion Design, both leading to the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. TheArtCareerProject.com (December 11) ranked FIT number one on their 2018 list of “The Best Fashion Merchandising Schools in the U.S.,” noting that “FIT has consistently amassed international acclaim and recognition for its programs in fashion, design, art, communications, and business. Its rigorous curriculum is steeped in its commitment to research, experiential learning, adaptable academics, and industry partnerships.”

StyleCraze.com (December 12) ranked FIT fourth in their list of “The Top 10 Fashion Schools in the World.” “FIT is known for creating curriculums that are not just thought-provoking but also inculcate techniques that are needed for the real world,” they reported.

Zippia.com (December 11) ranked FIT number one on their list of the “7 Best Colleges for Advertising Majors in New York.” FIT is the only New York City–based school that made the list.

WardrobeTrendsFashion.com (December 5) ranked FIT number four on their list of the “Top 100 Fashion Schools in the World” for 2017. FIT is one of only two New York schools placing within the top ten.

News.Sys-con.com (December 6) and HFNDigital.com (December 12) announced that FIT and First Insight, a leading solutions provider, have partnered to offer a certification course centered on optimizing predictive analytics to inform design and merchandising decisions. The new course will be available to students beginning with the spring 2018 semester and aims to inform participants on how to mine data and apply analytics to improve strategies for product design, selection, and pricing. “Our students are the retail merchants and planners of tomorrow, and this technology will give them learning outcomes critical to success in the global fashion marketplace,” said Robin Sackin, chair, Fashion Business Management.

TravelChannel.com (December 14) ranked The Museum at FIT (MFIT) number nine in their list of the “Top 10 Free U.S. Museums.”

NYTimes.com (December 16), The New York Times, and International New York Times (both December 17) spoke with Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, MFIT, about the staying power of high heels. “High heels are the number-one sartorial symbol of erotic femininity, and that’s not changing anytime soon,” she stated. Steele also spoke with BBC.com (December 15) for an article on the suit. “I think that it looks modern, it looks efficient,” said Steele. “Some would say it is functional, I think it’s more a case of: it carries connotations of modernity and functionalism and status.”
