FIT in the News – April 13, 2018

On the death of FIT Board of Trustees member, FIT alumna, and bridal gown designer Amsale Aberra, President Joyce F. Brown commented to NYTimes.com (April 5), The New York Times (April 6), and The International New York Times (April 8), “Amsale was a designer whose work exuded an elegance that emanated from her deep reservoir of grace and humility.”

WWD.com (April 9) reported on the upcoming Cerebral Palsy Foundation’s Design for Disability Fashion Show and Gala, to be held on May 9, at which outfits designed by FIT Fashion Design students—along with students from Pratt and Parsons—will be showcased in a runway show that features notable disabled people.

EditoratLarge.com (April 3) reported that Sasha Weleber, an undergraduate in Interior Design, received the First Place Beginning Undergraduate award for Student Design Competition, given by the Interior Design Educators Council.

Seventeen.com (April 6) included a quote from Bobbi Brown, founder of her namesake cosmetics company, from her speech at FIT’s 2014 Commencement ceremony. “Work hard but work smart,” said Brown. “Always. Every day. Nothing is handed to you and nothing is easy. You’re not owed anything. … No job or task is too small or beneath you. If you want to get ahead, volunteer to do the things no one else wants to do, and do it better. Be a sponge. Be open and learn.”

WWD.com (April 3) mentioned that FIT and Archroma, a Swiss resource for color and specialty chemicals, have formed a partnership to create the new Archroma Color Center on the FIT campus. Students in the Textile Development and Marketing program will have access to color management tools for their design projects, while getting more hands-on experience to prepare them for careers in the fashion and textile industries.

CharlotteObserver.com (April 4) and The News & Observer (April 5) picked up a quote that Mark-Evan Blackman, assistant professor, Menswear, gave to The New York Times, about the return of shorter shorts on some basketball courts.

Washingtonian.com (April 6) included The Museum at FIT (MFIT) as one of their suggestions on “How to Visit New York Without Giving Anyone There Your Money.”

The Body: Fashion and Physique, currently on view at MFIT, received coverage on Blog.VirginAtlantic.com (April 4).

Norell: Dean of American Fashion, currently on display at MFIT, received coverage in Town & Village (March 29) and Chelsea Clinton News (April 4), and on Paula.cl (Chile, April 7).

Pink: The History of a Pink, Pretty, Powerful Color, opening at MFIT in September, received pre-opening coverage on FemaleMag.com and Luxury-Insider.com (both April 4).
