Denim Day

April 25

For this event we ask that all members of the FIT community make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault. The information provided here is taken from denimdayinfo.org.

“Denim Day is a worldwide initiative to prevent sexual violence and to enforce the message that ‘consent has nothing to do with what I wear.’ This campaign originally began in 1997 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a sexual assault conviction because the justices felt ‘the victim’s jeans were so tight, she had to help remove them, thereby consenting to sex.’ The following day the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol to protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.”

Sexual Assault Awareness Education is brought to you by the Campus Anti-violence Education Group and sponsored by the FIT Security Advisory CommitteeDivision of Enrollment Management & Student Success, Department of Athletics and Recreation, Residence Hall Association, and more.
