On October 26, the Greater Essex County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. hosted a fundraiser at which Shawn Grain Carter, Fashion Business Management, was given their Community Service and Leadership Award. Jack and Jill of America is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 through 19, dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving, and civic duty.

The event was held at Jazz at Lincoln Center and featured a performance by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra playing the music of the musician Thelonious Monk. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Jack and Jill of America Foundation and The Sierra House, Inc., an organization that provides housing, food, and compassionate care to women and children in need.
