The Art of the Fold

On Thursday, November 29, students, faculty, and members of the Guild of Book Workers gathered in the Maker Minds Space on the sixth floor of the Gladys Marcus Library for an afternoon with book arts pioneer Hedi Kyle and book artist Ulla Warchol. The artists discussed various book structures and folding techniques beyond origami invented by Kyle and featured in their book, The Art of the Fold. Kyle said, “I love the simplicity of taking a flat piece of paper and folding it to make something three-dimensional. The more you fold it, the more it changes.”

Different structures were passed around for attendees to get a closer look and feel of each piece, while Warchol demonstrated an “accordion fold” technique and talked about the many tools that can be used. Afterward they led a hands-on tutorial where attendees learned three types of structures and created their own book art. The Art of the Fold can be borrowed from the Gladys Marcus Library or purchased at Barnes & Noble at FIT. Follow @theartofthefold on Instagram to learn more about Kyle and Warchol’s book art.
