Celebrity-Filled Trivia Night Promotes Social Justice and Civic Engagement

On July 23, the FIT Foundation teamed up with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation — the educational arm of America’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization — to host the Great Fashion Trivia Night, a virtual event in celebration of fashion, social justice, and the power of voting and using your voice.

Hosted by Derek Blasberg, YouTube’s head of fashion and beauty, the event featured a glamorous roster of speakers and quiz masters, including FIT President Joyce F. Brown, HRC President Alphonso David, Veronica Webb, Jeffrey Banks, Fern Mallis, Debra Messing, David Yurman, Vanessa Williams, Carolyn Murphy, Tan France, James Turlington, Alton Mason, Hari Nef, Jacob Bixenman, Halima Aden, and Ke’Andra Samone.

The trivia game tested the knowledge of more than 200 participants on pop culture, iconic fashion moments, and the LGBTQ movement. Questions also covered the importance of civic engagement; which President Brown has identified as a priority for the fall as FIT gears up to launch a collegewide voter registration campaign.

An array of prizes was awarded, including pieces from celebrated jewelry designer David Yurman, one of the evening’s sponsors. The event was also sponsored by Michael Kors, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and Sterling National Bank.

The event was a community effort for FIT, as Ann Cantrell, assistant professor of Fashion Business Management and owner of Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store in Brooklyn, curated in-home experience boxes filled with items from local Black-owned businesses for VIP ticket holders.

The event helped raise funds for FIT Foundation and HRC initiatives to advance social justice and equality.

Though the trivia game has officially ended, you can watch a recording of the program below or on FIT’s YouTube channel.
