FIT in the News – July 12, 2018

WWD (June 19) reported that Dr. Joyce F. Brown was a speaker at the 2018 Elly Awards, where she introduced honoree Deirdre Quinn, chief executive officer and cofounder of Lafayette 148.

WWD.com, FootwearNews.com (both June 26), and WWD (June 29) covered a two-week workshop with students from FIT and MIT during which they explored and developed clothing concepts using advanced functional materials that incorporate 3D printing or advanced knitting technologies. The initiative took place in collaboration with Advanced Functional Fabrics of America, with the students spending one week at MIT and one week at FIT. The participants also developed marketing strategies to accompany their product concepts.

A press release distributed via PRNewswire (June 20) announced the research findings of graduating students in FIT’s Master of Professional Studies program in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management (CFMM). The students’ capstone presentation, Transparent Beauty, was sponsored by Coty Inc. and took place on June 13. The release was picked up by nearly 250 outlets including BizJournals.com, BusinessInsider.com, TelemundoArmarillo.com, KelownDailyCourier.ca, and dozens of network affiliate stations of ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX. PETA.org and PublicNow.com (both June 25) reported that FIT’s Team Werewool was awarded “Best Presentation” in the 2018 Biodesign Challenge. The team, chosen from among 29 schools on six continents, represented FIT at the event held at the Museum of Modern Art on June 21 and 22. Werewool was also one of three teams selected as finalists for the Stella McCartney x PETA Animal-Free Wool Prize. Werewool is a faux wool fiber created by isolating and expressing a protein derived from human DNA, reported SmithsonianMag.com (June 29).

PaperMag.com (June 28) conducted a Q&A with Grace Insogna, who graduated in May with a degree in Fashion Design, after hip hop artist Lizzo wore a rainbow-hued outfit designed by Insogna for a performance during New York City’s Pride weekend. The outfit was last seen at the 2018 Future of Fashion runway show.

TheVillager.com (June 27) encouraged readers to visit INK MADE, the 2018 MFA in Illustration Visual Thesis Exhibition, on view at The Museum at FIT (MFIT) through July 7.

Jeffrey Silberman, chair, Textile Development and Marketing, spoke with Eco-Business.com (June 25) for an article on the environmental pollution caused by synthetic materials.

Forbes.com (June 28) turned to Shelley Kohan, assistant professor, Fashion Business Management, for comment on the newly appointed president of Bergdorf Goodman, Darcy Penick.

Marianne Klimchuk, associate chair, Packaging Design, participated in a roundtable discussion with TheDyeLine.com (June 15) to discuss sustainability and innovation challenges facing the packaging industry.

Crain’s New York Business (June 18) turned to Ajoy Sarkar, associate professor, Textile Development and Marketing, for an article on a “better way to dye.”

Vogue.com (June 14) quoted Theanne Schiros, assistant professor, Science and Mathematics, for an article on supermodel Gisele Bündchen and her environmental activism.

Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, MFIT, spoke with NYTimes.com (June 22) and The New York Times (June 24) about fashion photography. “Fashion photography was long looked down on as a commercial branch of photography,” said Steele. “So even after museums accepted that photography could be art, they still resisted collecting or exhibiting fashion photography.”

Vogue.fr (France, June 30) turned to Emma McClendon, associate curator of costume, MFIT, for the article “Why Are We Obsessed with American West Fashion?”

MatadorNetwork.com (June 26) included MFIT in their list of “The 10 Best Free Museums in New York City.”
