AmsterdamNews.com (July 12) reported that Dr. Joyce F. Brown attended the 2018 Elly Awards where she introduced honoree Deirdre Quinn, cofounder and chief executive officer of Lafayette 148.

A press release distributed via PR Newswire (July 13) reported that Goodwill opened a boutique named Curated on West 79th Street in Manhattan featuring specially selected clothing and items at slightly higher prices. This was the winning entry in a Goodwill-sponsored contest for FIT students who were tasked with coming up with an “innovative project” for the thrift chain. The release received many pickups including CrossroadsToday.com, Patch.com, and ThePostandMail.com, as well as dozens of affiliate stations of ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox. CosmeticsDesign.com (June 21), TimesLive.co.za (New Zealand), Mag.Greezoo.com (both June 29), and Happi.com (July 2) reported the research findings of graduating students in FIT’s Master of Professional Studies program in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management (CFMM). The students’ capstone presentation, “Transparent Beauty,” was sponsored by Coty Inc. and took place on June 13.

WWD.com (July 17) and WWD (July 18) announced that Lili Shi, Fashion Design, will represent FIT in the annual Supima Design Competition. Shi will show her five-look capsule collection, created using Supima Cotton, at the Supima runway show during New York Fashion Week this September, where the winner will be named.

BenchPeg.com (July 4) reviewed Digital Meets Handmade: Jewelry in the 21st Century, the international symposium held at FIT in May, which provided an arena for debate on how digital technology and making by hand duel for influence in the aesthetics, use, and cultural contexts of jewelry as both a manufactured product and an applied art form.

Forbes.com (July 9) reported that FIT’s Team Werewool was one of three teams selected as finalists for the Biodesign Challenge Animal-Free Wool Prize sponsored by Stella McCartney, PETA, and Stray Dog Capital. Werewool is a faux wool fiber created by isolating and expressing a protein derived from human DNA.

LiveMint.com (July 13) reported on the FIT/Infor Design and Tech Lab partnership with IBM and Tommy Hilfiger in which 15 students and three faculty members from three majors—Textile Development and Marketing, International Trade and Marketing for the Fashion Industries, and Fashion Design—used IBM Research artificial intelligence to create innovative designs for Tommy Hilfiger.

The Future of Fashion (FOF), held on May 3, continues to generate coverage, most recently in New York Amsterdam News (July 4).

Jeffrey Silberman, chair, Textile Development and Marketing, spoke with Medium.com (July 10) for an article on how synthetic fibers are contaminating the environment.

Shelley Kohan, assistant professor, Fashion Business Management, was quoted on WashingtonPost.com (July 19) and The Washington Post (July 20) in an article on “ugly” fashion. Kohan also commented to Refinery29.com (July 19) for an article on Nike’s “most advanced running shoe.”

Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, The Museum at FIT (MFIT), provided historical context to WSJ.com (July 10) for an article on fashion mavericks Coco Chanel, Giorgio Armani, and Christian Dior. EssentialRetail.com, FashionUnited.com (both July 18), and WWD.com (July 19) reported that Steele has curated hundreds of hours of footage for the online resource “Yoox Net-a-Porter Group Runway Archive Collection” on which thousands of videos from influential runway shows will be made available for educational research.

Emma McClendon, associate curator of costume, MFIT, spoke with Glamour (August issue), for an article on denim as resistance wear.

Fashion Unraveled, currently on display at MFIT, received coverage on Vogue.mx (Mexico) (July 8), and DiarioMetro.com.ni (Nicaragua) (July 18).

Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color, which opens at MFIT on September 7, received pre-opening coverage on Image.ie (Ireland), ForbesTravelGuide.com, Good-Celebrities.com (all July 2), HowtoSpendIt.FT.com (July 8), MarieFranceAsia.com (July 17), and WWD.com (July 20). Publishers Weekly (June 25) included the companion book in their list of upcoming art, architecture, and photography books.
