FIT in the News – November 30, 2018

The Division of Communications and External Relations is pleased to share FIT in the News, which reports highlights of major news stories about the college and/or that quote the college’s experts. These stories will be accessible for at least seven days by clicking on the links below.

WWD (November 6) covered FIT’s Textile Ocean Plastics Pollution Initiative, a student-led and multi-pronged educational program, which recently took students on a boat in Jamaica Bay to view ocean pollution firsthand. Much marine pollution is created by disposable plastics, microplastic fibrils, and other marine textile debris from both synthetic and natural textile products and fibers.

The Post-Star (November 2) reported on two students—Alexandra Drohobycky, Production Management: Fashion and Related Industries, and Alyssa Palmer, Advertising and Marketing Communications—who are both members of FIT’s volleyball team.

WWD (November 12) mentioned this year’s Couture Council Luncheon at which Narciso Rodriguez received the award for Artistry of Fashion.

AvenueMagazine.com (November 16) reported on a Couture Council event that paid tribute to the little black dress.

Sean Cormier, assistant chair, Textile Development and Marketing, was quoted in a press release distributed via Business Wire (November 5) that reported on FIT teaming up with Applied DNA Sciences to conduct DNA tagging of denim, a definitive method that authenticates of the origin of fibers throughout the supply chain. Fibre2Fashion (November 18) picked up the article.

Theanne Schiros, assistant professor, Science and Math, spoke with SourcingJournal.com  (November 16) about AlgiKnit for an article on biofashion.

Daniel Benkendorf, associate professor, Psychology, spoke with FashionMagazine.com (November 8) for an article on clothing consumption habits.

Today.com (November 6) turned to Emma McClendon, associate curator of costume, The Museum at FIT (MFIT), for the history of shoulder snaps on jackets. The article was picked up by MSN.com. McClendon also spoke with Welt.de (November 9) about denim.

Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, MFIT, was profiled by Noticias.Perfil.com (Uruguay, November 15).

Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color, currently on view at MFIT, received coverage on BeautyPackaging.com (November 2), TwinFactory.co.uk (November 11), SugarLaneBlog.com (November 12), and ElDiarioNY.com (November 16), and in Direct Selling News (November issue).  Entertainment Weekly (November 16) reviewed the companion book for the exhibition.

Fashion Unraveled, which closed at MFIT on November 17, received coverage on Blog.ApparelSearch.com (November 7).
