Documentary Screening: Sharing the Rough

April 29, 2017 at 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

The arts organization Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC) will present the documentary Sharing the Rough Saturday morning. Sharing the Rough is an award-winning film that illustrates how ethical, artisanal mining practices are changing the mining culture in Africa and benefiting communities, and the ecology of East Africa.

Director Orin Mazzoni, producer Monica Stephenson, and Roger Derry, the world class lapidarist whose work is shown in the film, will be on hand for a panel discussion after the film. This an opportunity for students and viewers to connect with how gems come out of the ground, and what a difference ethical mining can do for miners and their families.
Viewers will also get to meet the man who transformed the raw stones in the movie into finished gems, as well as the world-class jeweler who created the finished jewel.
This event is free for the FIT community with ID; doors open at 9:30 am, film starts at 10 am.
