Exhibition: Images of the Mind: Introduction to Chinese Calligraphic Art — Opens

February 13, 2019

hanging textile featuring chinese calligraphy

February 13–May 15

This exhibition showcases select works by FIT students in the team-taught course “Images of the Mind: Introduction to Chinese Calligraphic Art.” Through guided training, students gain knowledge of key concepts, methods, and techniques of calligraphy and brush pen writing. They also receive a thorough background in the history of the art form and its significance in Chinese.

By studying the history of calligraphy and its close connection to poetry, painting, and the dissemination of Taoist and Buddhist teachings, students deepen their understanding of why calligraphy has been considered the highest art form in Chinese culture, and how calligraphy has developed from a functional communications medium to a deeply expressive art form that combines personal feelings, situations, physical conditions, and the immediate environment.

Curated by Bing Hu and Chen Zhang; video installation curated by Mario E. Valero.
