Exhibition: The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange — Opens
September 27, 2018
September 27–October 9, 2018
The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange is a fashion showcase of 32 ball gowns—an initiative conceived by Eco-Age that celebrates artisanal fashion and skilled craftsmanship from the Commonwealth’s 53 countries. (The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent and equal sovereign states, mostly former territories of the British Empire, that includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Britain, as well as some of the tiniest of islands in the Pacific and the Caribbean.)
The project brings together established fashion brands and emerging talent to foster new partnerships, networks and trade links, as well as to champion sustainability.
Livia Firth is founder and creative director of Eco-Age Ltd., and this is her project with several partners and collaborations.
The overarching point of the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, said Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Scotland, “is about engaging young people and using fashion as a thread that connects everyone.”
A vital partner involved in this quest is Nest, an NGO dedicated to improving women’s well-being and preserving cultural traditions, reaching isolated homeworkers to empower them to know their rights and establish fair-trade practices.
The exhibition first opened at Buckingham Palace in February 2018.
