Film and Media Screening Series: ‘Patti Cake$,’ with Geremy Jasper

September 17, 2019 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Film and Media Screening Series will present Patti Cake$ (2017) with director Geremy Jasper; he will participate in a Q&A after the film.

In a coming-of-age story straight out of New Jersey, an unlikely rapper finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop legend in the making in Patti Cake$, the first feature film from commercial and music-video director Geremy Jasper. Set in gritty strip-mall suburbia, Patti Cake$ chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humor, raw energy, and some unforgettable beats.

Geremy Jasper is a writer/director whose first feature, Patti Cake$, was released by Fox Searchlight, premiered at Sundance in 2017, and went on to play SXSW, New Directors/New Films, and Director’s Fortnight at Cannes. He was nominated for Best Debut Film by the Directors Guild of America, as well as the Independent Spirit Awards and Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch. Jasper is also an acclaimed music video and commercial director, whose past work includes VMA nominated videos for Florence + The Machine and Selena Gomez. He won the Cannes Golden Lion and a TED Prize for his direction of the groundbreaking multimedia installation of Target: Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular, which was inducted into MoMA’s permanent collection.

The Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the School of Liberal Arts, and the departments of Film, Media and Performing Arts, English and Communication Studies, and Modern Languages and Cultures.

All Film and Media Screening Series films are free and open to the public.
