SUMMARY:New York Textile Month: "Threads: Changing Lives Stitch by Stitch" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a screening of the documentary film Threads\, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers Cathy Stevaluk and FIT alumna Yasmine Dabbous. \nThreads tells the story of how Surayia Rahman\, a Bangladeshi artist\, transforms the ancient Bengali quilting tradition of kantha to help revive it\, and creates internationally recognized art. Using her storytelling designs\, she teaches other women to embroider elaborate wall hangings. They rise from the despair of poverty to support their families\, leaving a legacy of beauty and sustainable livelihoods for generations to come. \nSurayia Rahman’s designs\, stitched by artisans in Bangladesh\, have been gifted to world leaders and are also in the permanent collections of the Royal Collection Trust in the United Kingdom\, the Textile Museum of Canada\, the Embroiderer’s Guild of America\, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan)\, and Powerhouse Museum in Australia. \nThis is a New York Textile Month event hosted by the Textile/Surface Design Department. DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of New York Textile Month\, Textile/Surface Design and Fabric Styling will co-host an event with Kornit Digital titled “Express Fashion.” Visitors interested in digital printing as an eco-friendly and profitable solution will view a display of recent\, digitally printed textile collections printed using Kornit’s advanced technology. \nKornit’s CEO Gabi Seligsohn will discuss how the company is taking advantage of the revolution in apparel shopping habits. Omer Kulka\, Kornit’s VP of marketing and product strategy\, will talk about the online business boom in the fashion industry. SUMMARY:Fashion Design Garment Construction Kornit Competition Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Fabric design by Janisha Biyanwila\, Textile/Surface Design BFA ’16.\nEarlier this year\, Kornit Digital challenged Textile/Surface Design students to create ecologically conscious designs on this year’s theme\, “Wearable Water” to be printed digitally onto fabric; three winners and an honorable mention were selected. This summer\, Fashion Design students created garments by choosing from the over 20 fabrics submitted for this challenge. Their designs will be on display Thursday\, September 29\, from 6 to 8 pm in the Dubinsky Student Center Eighth Floor Dining Room. \nFashion Design students were each given up to 5 yards of fabric; they could choose up to three designs from the original designs created by the Textile/Surface Design students. A panel of distinguished industry judges from design\, trend forecasting\, and print/textile mills will selecting three winners from the finished garments. \nFor more information\, contact Nomi Kleinman\, 212 217.5167\, or Jerry Dellova\, 212 217.5020.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the first annual New York Textile Month\, the FIT Library and the FIT Textile and Surface Design department are hosting an Wikipedia Edit-a-thon that will be held on two dates: September 27 and 29 from noon to 2 pm. The Edit-a-thon is an opportunity to create\, contribute to\, and edit articles in Wikipedia on topics related to textiles—their history\, production\, and cultural importance. \nWikipedia is the sixth most visited website in the world\, with over five million English-language encyclopedia articles. However\, the site is deficient in information relating to textiles history\, the fiber arts\, and surface design\, and events like this edit-a-thon work to address this imbalance. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required.
