SUMMARY:Exhibition: City in Bloom: Rediscovering Nature's Fragments — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Story Stitchers Collective\, Peace in the Prairie\, 2022. (Video still).\nFebruary 13–March 25\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery \nCity in Bloom is a meditation on the resilience of the human experience and the restorative capacity of nature within urban life. From the shaded elegance of tree-lined streets to the verdant sophistication of plants nurtured within apartments\, these moments of “urban nature” assert themselves to our advantage\, reminding city dwellers that serenity\, a sense of place within the infinite universe\, can be accessed simply by watching for owls in Central Park or pigeons on one’s own windowsill; beholding slivers of light\, cloud\, and sky between shimmery\, towering skyscrapers; listening for seagulls as one walks toward a lake or river\, then smelling the salty breeze floating across it. After all\, even in the most industrialized of spaces\, nature’s carefully calibrated biorhythms persist. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Picturing Light: Artists Explore Luminosity — Closes
DESCRIPTION:From left: Magdelena Jakubczak (Communication Design student)\, Seth Howe (invited artist)\, Carol Salmanson (invited artist)\, Austin Jensen (Photography alumnus).\nSeptember 21–October 27\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nPicturing Light\, which is a follow-up to Picturing Space (2019)\, is an exploration of the many manifestations of light. The exhibition brings together the work of fine artists and photographers\, and exhibition\, textile\, and interior designers who respond to natural and artificial light. The specific focus is on work that makes light its primary subject matter\, not just as the means to reveal other content. Some of the work explores the visible spectrum scientifically. Other pieces create environmental experiences through controlled lighting. \nThe exhibition is organized into four major categories: \n\nNatural Light—projects that use natural light to illuminate the work and cast shadows and transparencies;\nArtificial Light—installations with projections\, neon\, video\, lasers and other light sources;\nReflected Light—using materials such as iridescent paint\, mirrors and dichroic film to reflect light; and\nDepicted Light—paintings\, films and photography which shows the effect of light.\n\nPicturing Light is curated by Anne Finkelstein\, adjunct assistant professor of Spatial Experience Design. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. SUMMARY:Fashion Design AAS Exhibition: Denim Divine — Opens
DESCRIPTION:April 3–21\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nFor the capstone projects of the spring 2024 Fashion Design AAS program\, students were tasked with creating garments using only denim fabric. As a result\, the exhibition focuses on simple forms and techniques\, encouraging innovation\, creativity\, and craftsmanship. Included are works selected for Critic Awards by industry mentors who have worked alongside students throughout the semester. \nDenim’s appeal is universal. From day to night\, from workwear to runway\, denim transcends gender\, age\, and class. Its durability has made it an essential part of our everyday life. Denim Divine is a tribute to this denim’s timeless appeal and enduring influence. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Pattern\, the Grid\, and Other Systems — Closes
DESCRIPTION:October 27–December 3\, 2023\nArt and Design Gallery \nCurated by FIT Associate Professor of Fine Arts Julia Jacquette\, this exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology features work that utilizes and explores all aspects of repetition and pattern. \nPattern is often thought of in terms of art and design: the repetition of shape in surface design. But the definition of pattern can be even more expansive: It’s a regularity or repetition in the world in general. It includes the repetition of abstract ideas as well as form. \nPattern\, the Grid\, and Other Systems will include two-dimensional\, three-dimensional\, and time-based artwork from FIT faculty\, students\, and distinguished alumni\, as well as from guest artists. In addition\, panel discussions and talks by participating artists and guest lecturers will take place during the run of the exhibition. \nFeatured Artists:\nAvantika Bawa\, Rufina Bazlova\, Susan Daykin\, Oasa DuVerney\, Abigail DeVille\, Carla Edwards\, Anne Finkelstein\, Kathleen Granados\, Haley Hayden\, Peter Hoffmeister\, Karl Jensen\, Ruth Jeyaveeran\, Nomi Kleinman\, Joyce Kozloff\, Mark Kurdziel\, Marie Lorenz\, Nontsikelelo Mutiti\, John O’Connor\, Stephanie Pierce\, Lobsang Tsewang\, Maxim Tyminko\, Jessica Wynne\, Farangiz Yusupova\, Joseph Zutelgte\, plus FIT students to be announced. \nThe exhibition will be on display October 27 through December 3 in FIT’s Art and Design Gallery\, located at the northwest corner of West 27th Street and Seventh Avenue in New York City. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited r outside artists in every exhibition. DESCRIPTION:August 3–September 10\, 2023\nArt and Design Gallery \nIn the early decades of the 20th century\, FIT founder and president Max Meyer (1876–1953)\, then a buyer for a major New York City cloak and suit manufacturer\, commissioned thousands of drawings of French couture designs to be licensed for production in the U.S. This exhibition juxtaposes a selection of these sublime watercolor and ink images from houses such as Chanel\, Poiret\, Molyneux\, Lanvin\, and Paquin with comparable examples of actual garments from the study collection of FIT’s graduate program in Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice. Each garment showcases student and alumni skills in costume conservation and mounting. \nAn adjoining gallery features the work of alum and former professor Daria Dorosh\, PhD. Her contemporary art and fashion pieces respond to Meyer in many ways\, and also stand on their own. \nUnconventional Then\, Now\, and Always will feature innovative augmented reality displays that invite engagement. The show highlights the unique resource that is Gladys Marcus Library’s Special Collections and College Archives where the original sketches reside along with an astounding wealth of original materials related to the industry. \nThe show is a collaboration between the Spatial Experience Design Department\, Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice\, and the Special Collections and College Archives. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and guest artists in each exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open from 9 am to 6 pm daily. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
