May 21, 2019 - May 24, 2019

flyer for Beyond Species exhibition

May 21–24; opening reception: Tuesday, May 21, 7–9 pm
72 Warren St., New York, NY

Beyond Species is an off-campus exhibition curated by graduating students in the MA in Art Market Studies program.

Changes to human interactions with the environment and advances in technology have made interspecies relationships more precarious by challenging the traditional hierarchy of species. What is the role of humans vis-à-vis animals, machines, and other humans? Is it possible to find balance, harmony, and a common language?

Beyond Species highlights nine international artists who use a variety of techniques, media, and subject matter to investigate permutations of speciesism, a problem that contemporary art, in essence, can’t ignore. These artists include Pindar van Arman, Hannah Rose Berry, Ambrus Gero, Vitaly Komar, Kuang-Yi Ku, Christine Rai, Richard Sheng, Rosary Solimanto, and Wei-Ping Wang. Each artist uses his or her own philosophy to determine what it means to be human and where our interactions with both animals and AI technology are headed. Beyond Species brings different perspectives to the exploration of interspecies relationships, proposing a range of reactions to these questions, from ensuring that technology remains in the service of humanity to non-hierarchical collaboration among all species and harmonious coexistence.

The opening reception on Tuesday, May 21, 7–9 pm is free and open to the public.
