Globally Connected @ FIT: Mediatization and Datafication in the Field of Fashion

April 27, 2023 at 12:15 pm - 1:00 pm

Agnès Rocamora
Agnès Rocamora.

In this conversation, Dr. Agnès Rocamora will bring mediatization theory in dialogue with critical data studies to look at the idea of the datafication of the field of fashion. Datafication is the process whereby everyday practices and experiences are turned into quantified digital data. Rocamora will unpack this phenomenon, focusing in particular on the field of fashion influencers. She will reflect on the role of data as capital and of algorithms as key players and gatekeepers in fashion.

Dr. Agnès Rocamora is professor of social and cultural studies at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. She is the author of Fashioning the City: Paris, Fashion and the Media (2009), and her writing on the field of fashion and on the fashion media has appeared in journals such as Fashion Theory, Journalism Practice, Sociology, Sociétés, and the Journal of Consumer Culture. She is a co-editor of Thinking Through Fashion: A Guide to Key Theorists (2015), of The Handbook of Fashion Studies (2013), and of Fashion Media: Past and Present (2019), and has contributed to various books including Fashion’s World Cities (2006), Fashion as Photograph: Viewing and Reviewing Images of Fashion (2008), Critical Luxury Studies (2016), and The End of Fashion. Clothing and Dress in the Age of Globalization (2018).
