Globally Connected @ FIT: The Future of Chinese Creative Fashion with a Historical Perspective

December 14, 2023 at 12:15 pm - 1:00 pm

Sabine IchikawaThe talk will be based on Dr. Sabine Ichikawa’s book published in 2022, L’émergence d’une industrie créative en Asie – L’apport du Japon dans le système de mode chinois (The Emergence of a Creative Industry in Asia – Japan’s Contribution to the Chinese Fashion System) which examines the emergence of the Chinese fashion industry in the last 150 years, and the role played by Japan. This book comes out of her PhD dissertation in business history, earned at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

Dr. Sabine Ichikawa is a French scholar who has embraced academia after spending several years in the industry as a fashion designer and a brand manager. She worked in small fashion houses and large luxury groups in several countries (Italy, USA, Japan, France, China). Her expertise lies in bridging East and West through socio-cultural contextualization. Her research explores Chinese creative and cultural industries and current projects span from sustainable consumption to luxury and circular economy, creative education, and the impact of a Chinese “ecological civilization” and “cultural confidence” in millennials. As associate professor of marketing, she runs two Master of Science programs in luxury marketing between Shanghai and Paris for ESSCA School of Management, a French business school with 10 campuses.
