Liberal Arts Dean’s Forum: Presidential Scholars Program Colloquium
February 12, 2020 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Presented by Professor Praveen K. Chaudhry, Vanishing Community, Vanishing Cultures: The Yörüks of Taurus Mountains, Turkey is a part of an ongoing visual ethnographic research on the impact of migration and globalization on nomadic communities in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. (An exhibition is on view in the Gladys Marcus Library Feb. 3–March 31.)
This is a new project following his decade-long journey in the Himalayan communities— Invisible Nomads of Himalayas: A Life Caught in Turmoil, which was exhibited in New York City, New Delhi, and multiple cities in Mexico. For this project on Turkish nomadic communities, Professor Chaudhry visited the region multiple times since 2016. This research addresses problems of state formation and erasure of the cultures through the eyes of nomadic people and weavers who have been living in the areas for hundreds of years. The exhibition, through visual storytelling, documents everyday struggles of these people and invites viewers to be a part of their journey as they resist globalization.
This event is sponsored by the Presidential Scholars program, the Social Sciences and History of Art departments, and the School of Liberal Arts.
This event is for the FIT community only.
