The Financial Times spoke with Jewelry Design Adjunct Associate Professor Michael Coan about the popularity of the elephant motif in jewelry pieces. Coan remarked that the elephant may have first appeared as early as 1693 in Western jewelry in Denmark. He said, “Elephants were regarded as towers of strength; they were regarded as [symbols of] longevity … and incredibly strong family ties.”
