WWD.com (April 25) and FashionWeekDaily.com (April 26) announced that Fern Mallis has been named a director of the FIT Foundation. Mallis, a fashion and design consultant and founder of New York Fashion Week, will serve as a mentor, industry liaison, advocate, and philanthropic advisor to advance the mission and vision of FIT.
TeenVogue.com (April 23) spotlighted the work of two FIT students who are working in sustainable fashion design, Shannon Cooney and Aleksandra Gosiewski, for the article “How Four Fashion Design Schools Are Teaching Sustainability.” Parsons, Savannah College of Art and Design, and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising are the other featured schools.
FootwearNews.com (April 24) announced that Den Ly, a graduating senior in Accessories Design, has been named the winner of the 2017 Joseph C. Moore Footwear Scholarship. Awarded by The Fashion Footwear Association of New York and the Arsutoria School in Milan. The scholarship will provide Ly with advanced training in footwear design at a 13-week shoe pattern and prototyping course at Arsutoria, an international institute of footwear and leather goods design.
HollywoodLife.com (April 17), DailyMotion.com (April 19), and TheKnockTurnal.com (April 22) unveiled the NFLxFIT Visual System Design Contest, a collaboration between the National Football League (NFL) and FIT, in which students minoring in Creative Technology were challenged to reimagine visual interpretations that represent all 32 NFL teams’ identities, including artwork and graphics inspired by the teams’ existing logos and fan cultures. The systems will be offered for use on NFL merchandise.
The panel discussion “Fashion in Flux: Fashion Revolution,” sponsored by the FIT Student Government Association and held on April 26, was listed on EcoCult.com (April 21).
QZ.com (April 23) turned to Mark-Evan Blackman, assistant professor, Menswear, for an article on the difficulties of sizing clothing for women size 16 and above. “When certain size ranges are chronically not fitting well,” says Blackman, “it’s because they’re not being fit and are being mathematically graded up.”
Emma Sosa, instructor, Center for Continuing and Professional Studies, spoke with Vice.com (April 25) for an article on the second-hand retailer Allan and Suzi.
Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, The Museum at FIT (MFIT), commented to HollywoodReporter.com (April 20) about the outré looks being worn by many men on the red carpet. “It’s a recurring variant on the original Peacock Revolution of the 1960s when young men broke out of the gray flannel suit look of the ’50s and started wearing more color and materials like velvet and lace,” said Steele.
