FIT in the News – May 25

WWD.com and FashionWeekDaily.com (both May 22) reported that fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez will receive the 2018 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion. The award will be presented at the Couture Council’s annual luncheon benefitting The Museum at FIT (MFIT) on September 5 at Lincoln Center.

In an article examining why the fashion industry is dominated by men, despite that the majority of clothing is designed for women, The New York Times and NYTimes.com (both May 20) reported that 86 percent of the current graduating class at FIT is female.

New York magazine’s TheCut.com (May 16) aired an exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary The Gospel According to André, where former Vogue fashion editor-at-large André Leon Talley viewed items held in the special collections of MFIT that were owned by Diana Vreeland.

The Future of Fashion (FOF), held on May 3, continues to generate coverage, most recently a feature on TeenVogue.com (May 16), a video interview on Nylon.com (May 18), and feature article on TheCurvyFashionista.com (May 21) with Grace Insogna about her plus-size knit garment that was seen on the FOF runway, a profile of People’s Choice Award winner Chaya Hoffman on Forward.com (May 20), and an article in Shukan New York Seikatsu and NYSeikatsu.com (both May 21).

WWD (May 15) announced that FIT and the FIT Foundation will honor Ivan Bart, president of IMG Models and head of IMG’s global fashion event business, Lens, and Made to Measure; Jane Hertzmark Hudis, group president of the Estée Lauder Companies Inc.; and J. Michael Stanley, managing director at Rosenthal & Rosenthal, at FIT’s Annual Awards Gala. The event will be held on June 14 at Cipriani on 42nd Street.

GiftsandDec.com (May 15) noted that associate’s and bachelor’s degree students in the Textile/Surface Design department displayed their artwork at the annual Suretex show, held at New York’s Jacob Javits Center from May 20 to 22.

RetailDive.com (May 21) spoke with Shelley Kohan, assistant professor, Fashion Business Management, for an article on the retailer David’s Bridal.
