Dressing down during COVID-19
Mark-Evan Blackman, assistant professor, Fashion Design, spoke about how, during the ongoing pandemic, the wearing of men’s suits has been declining: “Our entire culture has been casualized. What got hit was men’s tailored garments. It used to be if you were middle management or higher, you had to wear a suit, and it’s not Paris, so you couldn’t wear the same suit every day. But we’ve had plenty of time to figure this out. There’s a huge opportunity right now, in the uncertainty of it all.”
Difficulties facing department stores
Vincent Quan, associate professor, Fashion Merchandising Management, spoke about how department stores, once a shopping necessity have failed to adapt: “Brands partnered with department stores for exposure, for reach, because they didn’t have the capital to do it on their own. Department stores served a function. But now comes the digital age.”
How past historical events have influenced fashion
Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, The Museum at FIT, on how the current pandemic might impact fashion: “We assume, they’re so devastating, world historical events surely have a major impact on fashion, and yet we find they don’t, really, not in terms of a style change.”
