How President Brown “Gets It Done”
President Joyce F. Brown discusses the launch of the Social Justice Center, her morning routine, and how her job has changed over the last 25 years as FIT’s president: “We sit at the intersection of education and industry. We fuel the ranks of the creative industries in New York especially, but beyond the borders of New York too.”
Couture Council Luncheon
The Couture Council of The Museum at FIT (MFIT) honored Maria Grazia Chiuri, creative director of women’s haute couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories collections for Dior, with its 2022 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion. The award was presented by Samira Nasr, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, during the council’s annual fundraising luncheon, held this year at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on September 7.

Wearing White After Labor Day
Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, MFIT on wearing white after Labor Day: “As you got more and more sort of ordinary people, whether middle class or lower middle class, being able to have enough money to try to dress fashionably, then there become more rules so that the more upper class people can say ‘yes, but you’re doing it wrong,'”

Raissa Bretaña, adjunct instructor, History of Art, on the iconic “Kelly” bag: “The Hermès Kelly bag, first designed in 1935 and renamed in the 1950s for Grace Kelly, is widely regarded as the first collectible It bag.”
Vincent Quan, chair, Fashion Business Management at FIT’s school in Korea, on virtual fashion avatars: “Common brands will have challenges integrating themselves because the middle of the road consumer isn’t in the metaverse yet. Middle America will get the metaverse, but it will take time.”
Iconic Hard Rock T-Shirt
CJ Yeh, professor, Creative Technology and Design, on the iconic Hard Rock t-shirt: “The success of this T-shirt isn’t about the design. It’s about the graphic. Normally, graphic tees become famous because of their design, because it’s unique and eye-catching. But this particular graphic tee is a cultural icon.”
