FIT is a place for innovation and experimentation, a school built for exploration. So when students of the School of Art and Design go out into the world post-graduation, it’s not surprising to see them pushing boundaries in the creative industries.

Now, Creative Industry: The Alumni Journey, the exhibition on view in the Art and Design Gallery through January 29, 2023, brings the work of 17 of those alumni together in one place.

Creative Industry is co-curated by Troy Richards, dean of the School of Art and Design, and Kseniya Baranova, assistant manager of Alumni Relations and the FIT Foundation, and features work in photography, fashion design, multimedia, jewelry design, weaving, wallpaper, graphic design, and painting from a select group of 17 illustrious FIT alumni. The diversity of mediums, design practices, and career paths in the exhibition is representative of the lifelong journey of alumni in the creative industries, united by the woven thread of the foundation toward their chosen pathways laid during their studies at FIT. Diverse in medium, this exhibition spotlights the career trajectories of the alumni, highlighting their innovations and interesting journeys through the creative industries.

“This exhibition is the first of its kind as a co-curatorial partnership between the FIT Foundation and the School of Art and Design, with the vision of this being the first iteration of an annual alumni showcase exhibition,” Richards said. “We have always been proud of our alumni, seeing their success gives purpose to the work we do at FIT. In curating Creative Industry: The Alumni Journey, we have built a solid base from which we look to build upon in both breadth and scope.”

Adjacent to the exhibition is Hue: A Retrospective, a display representing 15 years of the college’s magazine. Hue‘s trademark bold images, strong visual storytelling, and sophisticated graphic design are displayed in the magazine’s covers and spreads, demonstrating its connection to the FIT alumni community and adjacent creative industries in New York and beyond.

“Our goal was to create an exhibition representative of all our illustrious alums and the FIT story,” Baranova said.
