Bernard Dillard, associate professor of Mathematics, invented and received a utility patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an outdoor light he calls the Visiflex. The motion-sensing light, meant for homes and businesses, is attached to pliable tubes that can direct light around corners.
Dillard came up with the idea when searching for an outdoor light for his own home. He worked with a local company that aids inventors to develop the design and apply for the patent. Right now, the Visiflex only exists as a design; he is hoping to license the technology to a company that would manufacture the device.
