The college is pleased to announce the unveiling of its winter windows—Gift of Making: A Whimsical Celebration of Art, Design, and Creativity at FIT, featuring work from all 17 disciplines in the School of Art and Design. The windows offer two distinct viewing experiences: one looking in from Seventh Avenue and another from inside the Art and Design Gallery.
Gift of Making transforms the Art and Design Gallery’s windows into an imaginative, holiday-inspired celebration of creativity and craft. Through a series of displays that unfold like chapters in a “winter tale,” the installation showcases student work from every major in the School of Art and Design. Stacked, open-fronted gift boxes evoke cabinets of curiosity, framing inventive objects, garments, and images that represent the many facets of art and design at FIT. Interwoven with playful ribbons and floating snowflakes, the displays highlight the joy of creating—and the vibrant community of artists behind it.
Key elements include iridescent and mirrored box interiors, photography prints on transparent acrylic, suspended like ice panels, and tiny paper-engineered “pop-up”-style elements integrated in boxes.
The idea for the windows was born nearly a year ago when Troy Richards, dean of the School of Art and Design, proposed to Glenn Sokoli, assistant professor of Spatial Experience Design, that FIT should have its own windows to draw people to the college during the holidays.
The disciplines of the School of Art and Design are Advertising and Digital Design; Animation, Interactive Media, and Game Design; Communication Design; Fabric Styling; Fashion Design; Fine Arts; Footwear and Accessories Design; Graphic Design; Illustration; Interior Design; Jewelry Design; Menswear; Packaging Design; Photography and Related Media; Spatial Experience Design; Textile/Surface Design; and Toy Design.
Gift of Making is on display November 20 through January 11, and gallery hours are 9 am to 5 pm daily.
