FIT in the News – November 6, 2017

The Division of Communications and External Relations is pleased to share FIT in the News, which reports highlights of major news stories about the college and/or that quote the college’s experts. These stories will be accessible for at least seven days by clicking on the links below.

The fashion news website Business of Fashion—in its third annual Global Fashion School Rankings— placed FIT seventh in the world in its international rankings of undergraduate fashion programs, fifth in their international rankings of graduate fashion programs, and fourth in their worldwide graduate business school rankings. FIT is one of only two U.S. schools to make the Top Ten. The rankings are part of BoF’s annual report on the state of fashion education, which includes an in-depth analysis of key geographies and detailed profiles of the top 50 undergraduate and the top 25 graduate fashion programs.

AccessoriesMagazine.com (October 25) delved into the newly renovated Special Collections and College Archives, housed in the college’s Gladys Marcus Library. The facilities house and protect the approximately 6,000 linear feet of rare and fragile fashion, retail, and related materials in the collection. These include original works of art on paper, manuscript collections dating back to the 1590s, periodicals from the 1770s, scrapbooks, shoe prototypes dating to the 1960s, and 240 linear feet of institutional archives, among other resources.

Xploration Nature Knows Best, which aired on Fox on Saturday, October 28, at 9:30 am (link not available), featured team #GROWAPAIR, which literally “grew” a pair of baby shoes from microbial cellulose, mycelium, and pineapple. The team represented FIT at the 2017 Biodesign Challenge.

Aletia.org (October 30) reported on the second annual Design for Disability Gala, the culmination of a five-month competition with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation during which two Fashion Design students, as well as students from Parsons and Pratt, created clothing for people with disabilities. The finalists were paired with models with disabilities, and their designs were revealed in a runway show at the foundation’s annual gala. Designer Derek Lam acted as honorary chair and design mentor. Pickups include CatholicCanada.com (October 30).

ChelseaNow.com (October 25) and Chelsea Now (with a two-page centerfold spread, not available online, October 26) reported on ChalkFIT, the annual temporary street art display by Illustration students on the exterior walls of FIT. NHL.com (October 23), MSGNetworks.com (October 26), and NHL.NBCSports.com (October 27) reported that Tony Capparelli, adjunct assistant professor, Illustration, as part of ChalkFIT, painted a mural of NHL player Brian Boyle of the New Jersey Devils.

Crain’s New York Business (October 23) spoke with John Capo, adjunct instructor, Advertising and Marketing Communications, on starting his own Halloween Film Festival.

Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, The Museum at FIT (MFIT), was interviewed by FT.com (October 27) and The Financial Times (October 28, clip unavailable) for the article “Linked In: The Allure of Chainmail.”
