FIT in the News – March 2

NY1 News (Feb. 16) aired a feature about the AlgiKnit and #GROWAPAIR projects, which both began as entries to the Biodesign Challenge. The segment ran as part of NY1’s New York Fashion Week coverage, with morning news anchor Pat Kiernan and reporter Stephanie Simon continuing the conversation after showing the video.

VOANews.com (Feb. 15) covered the U.S. Postal Service’s reveal of Kam Mak’s design of the 2018 Lunar New Year postage stamp for the Year of the Dog. Mak, professor and assistant chair, Illustration, was selected by the USPS in 2008 to design an annual stamp commemorating the Chinese New Year through 2019.

WWD.com (Feb. 15) announced FIT’s Beauty Industry Essentials program, an online program designed for those interested in a career in the beauty industry. Virginia Bonofiglio, chair and professor, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing, told WWD, “What students learn from the program is where there is a space for them in the beauty sector.” BeautyUndercover.com (Feb. 16) and GCIMagazine.com (Feb. 19) also reported on the program.

JCKOnline.com (Feb. 20) announced that Jung Soo Lee, a second-year Jewelry Design student, has won the Second Annual Scott Kay/FIT Jewelry Design Contest.

Metalsmith magazine (January 2018) featured the work of Wendy Yothers, assistant professor and chair, Jewelry Design. Her pieces accompanied an article about the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibition New York Silver, Then and Now, where the same piece is currently on view.

In December, Robin Givhan, fashion critic for the WashingtonPost.com (Dec. 6), spoke with Mark-Evan Blackman, assistant professor, Menswear, about the “power suit.” The article was picked up by The Chicago Tribune, Daily Press, and The Hartford Courant (all Feb. 18), among others.

Valerie Steele spoke with Elle.com (Feb. 14) about Japanese fashion label Sacai and the increasing popularity of its designer, Chistose Abe.

Norell: Dean of American Fashion, currently on view at MFIT, received coverage on Suzy Menkes’ New York Fashion Week blog post for international Vogue editions, including Vogue.jp (Feb. 14), Vogue.au, and Vogue.it (both Feb. 15). The exhibition and book also were also featured on TownandCountrymag.com, OliverAndS.com (both Feb. 16), PollyTalkfromNewYork.blogspot.com (Feb. 19), and Garage.Vice.com (Feb. 21).

Force of Nature, which closed on November 18, 2017, received a mention on OnTrendToday.blogspot.com (Feb. 19).
