When Grace Insogna (BFA, Fashion Design ’18) designed her knitwear look for her thesis capsule collection, she never imagined it would be worn by hip hop artist Lizzo.

Enter Instagram, where Lizzo saw the look on Insogna’s account and commented that she would love to wear it. When it came time to perform at Pride Island during New York’s Pride celebrations on Sunday, June 24, Lizzo’s stylist reached out to Insogna, who was thrilled to be able to provide the look for her performance.

“I was already a big fan, so it was pretty validating,” Insogna said. “I feel like she has to hunt for people to dress her because she’s plus size, and I imagine she and her stylist go through a lot of images to find things for her to wear.”

In fact, Insogna’s look represented the first time a plus size look and model walked the runway in FIT’s Future of Fashion runway show.

Lizzo performed at Pride Island, a multi-day LGBTQ cultural experience at Pier 97, showcasing everyone from legendary soul singers to indie pop bands. Her performance in the outfit was picked up on social media widely, and has led to additional opportunities for Insogna, including a forthcoming interview with Paper Magazine.
