In China, the traditional wedding gown is a red silk qipao, a body-hugging dress. In the West, white gowns with full skirts are the convention. But what if you’re a Chinese-American bride? You can’t wear both—can you? Graduating FIT student Jingjing Lin ’19 developed a solution to this dilemma: a qipao that converts instantly to a white silk number. She designed this unconventional garment as her capstone project in her major, Technical Design. Lin says, “I thought about my past and my future while I was designing—where I came from and who I am now. That’s why I decided to combine Chinese and American elements in my design.”
