‘Hue’ Honored for Excellence

Hue, the magazine of FIT, has once again earned prestigious accolades for its exceptional design. For the second consecutive year, the publication placed among the top three entries in PRINT magazine’s annual editorial design competition, securing third place. (Last year it placed first, ahead of The New York Times.) Hue also received the SUNY Council for University Advancement‘s Best of Category, Excellence in Design Award, presented at the 2024 SUNYCUAD Educational Conference in Hauppauge, New York.

This is the cover of Hue magazine's fall 2023 issue.
The award-winning cover. Parfenov works at Sogé Studio, an all-women company founded by Stephanie Ogé, Fashion Design ’06.

Both awards recognized Hue’s fall 2023 issue, a special edition focused on packaging design. The innovative cover featured an actual perforated and scored box that could be removed and assembled, showcasing the artwork of FIT alum Masha Parfenov, Textile/Surface Design ’19.

“This cover was a great collaborative endeavor,” said Alexander Isley, the esteemed designer who provides art direction for Hue. “When discussing the packaging design feature, an editor proposed incorporating an actual package as the cover. We explored different paper weights and perforation techniques with our printer to create a box that was both removable and durable for mailing.”

Isley, a former president of The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) whose portfolio includes Armani Jeans and Goodwill, added, “One of our goals is to feature the work of FIT’s talented students and alumni, making Masha’s textile design a perfect fit.”

Since its founding in 2007, Hue has won top awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, and others. The magazine is produced by the Division of Communications and External Relations; the editors are Chief Storyteller Alex Joseph, MA ’15, and Managing Editor Jonathan Vatner. Hue‘s editorial director, Linda Angrilli, who retired this spring, also worked on the winning issue.
