
Elena Romero, assistant chair and assistant professor, Marketing Communications, is a two-time winner of the 46th Annual Telly Awards. Her television work at Latinas, which airs on CUNY TV, won both a Silver and a Bronze award in the Series–Culture & Lifestyle Category. A Silver award was awarded for Latinas Season 5, for which Romero served as a reporter and producer. She also won a Bronze award for the Latinas and CUNY TV special series “Hip Hop Subway: The L Line,” which spotlighted Latinos in hip hop during the genre’s 50th anniversary. Romero was instrumental in developing, co-hosting, and co-producing the series.
“Hip Hop Subway: The L Line,” co-hosted by Romero and Tuffy Questell, recounts the hip-hop story through the Latino lens, discussing the contributions made by Latino artists in areas that include photography, fashion, emceeing, dance, and graffiti activism. Featured guests included photographers Danny Hastings and Johnny Nunez; rappers Dres, formerly of Black Sheep, and Lumidee; Video Music Box creator and co-host Ralph McDaniels; filmmakers Raquel Cepeda and Ulysses Terrero; Kim Osorio, former editor-in-chief of The Source; author Vikki Tobak; celebrity stylist Michelle Ten; DTLR executive Antonio Gray; fashion designers April Walker and Willie Esco; and spoken word artist and executive director of the Nuyorican Poets Café, Caridad de la Luz.
