For the month of August, Ryan Hartley Smith, associate professor of Graduate Illustration, was the featured artist for The New York TimesWordle Review, a daily forum that reviews the day’s Wordle word, word definition, and data on how people solve the game. (Wordle is a web-based word game owned by the Times in which players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word.)

For the Wordle Review, each month an illustrator is invited to create weekly backgrounds that run daily with different Wordle numbers displayed. The artist is asked to come up with a theme for the month—one that has nothing to do with the words of the day; players are spoiler-averse. The Times also displays a short bio on the illustrator in each of the daily published reviews.

Hartley Smith’s theme was outdoor summer activities in New York. Check out his creations for the month of August on the Wordle Review page.
