C.J. Yeh and Christie Shin, Communication Design Pathways, were invited to present at the 2019 Digital Signage Expo (DSE). The Digital Signage Expo is the world’s first comprehensive international event dedicated to digital signage solutions, where every end user vertical market is covered, from retail to entertainment. It brings together over 5,000 digital signage users, systems integrators, distributors, installers, advertising and marketing professionals.
Yeh and Shin’s presentation, “Content Design for Digital Displays,” explored the fundamental principles of digital design including screen-based typography, UX, UI, content marketing, and digital product design. Strategies, case studies, and teaching methodologies from FIT’s Creative Technology and Design subject area were introduced. They used examples of kinetic typography, content-centric app design, user experience design, and augmented reality. Related projects from FIT’s Advertising and Digital Design BFA and Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design BFA were also included in this presentation.
In addition to speaking at the main event, Yeh and Shin also led a design thinking workshop for digital product design. As part of the DSE initiative to strengthen the educational component of the event, this one-day workshop included quick-fire exercises and short lectures to guide the participants through the iterative process of design thinking: emphasize, define, ideate, and test. The goal was to discover and define meaningful/useful insights as well as to identify innovative ways to provide values to the intended target consumers.
