President Brown on the Supreme Court’s Affirmative Action Decision

FIT LogoFIT President Joyce F. Brown has issued comments about the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 29 ruling on Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, et. al. Her statement reads as follows:

Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court constitutes a major setback, not only for higher education but for the progress we seek nationally in creating systems that expand opportunities for access and inclusivity.

The mission of higher education is to analyze, articulate, and then solve for the critical issues of the day. At FIT, we pride ourselves in cultivating a rich community of diverse voices reflective of varied backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives—based on different lived experiences

As a member of the State University of New York, one of the largest public university systems in the world, and as an urban campus in New York City, one of the most diverse cities in the nation, we have an obligation to maintain an environment that reveres and respects the richness of differing points of view. This is a core value of our mission and vision.

We will continue to uphold these values while working within the parameters established by the court.
